PDF for construction and architecture: from design to planning permission

2 min read·25 July 2026

Construction drawings, specifications, safety plans and permit applications are all exchanged as PDFs in the construction industry. Large formats, technical precision and the need for digital signatures make PDF indispensable for architects and contractors.

Construction drawings as PDF

CAD software (AutoCAD, Revit, ArchiCAD) exports directly to PDF. Construction drawings are often in A1 or A0 format — check that page size is preserved correctly. Use PDF merge to combine all drawing sheets (site plan, floor plans, sections, elevations) into one project package.

Specifications and contract documents

Specifications (technical descriptions of materials and methods) often run to hundreds of pages. Combine the specification with drawings, bills of quantities and contract conditions into one PDF package using PDF merge. Sign the whole package digitally once all parties agree.

Planning permission applications

Planning authority submissions require specific PDFs with correct file names and maximum file sizes. Use PDF compression to reduce large drawing PDFs within upload limits. Flatten interactive forms before uploading to planning portals.

Revision drawings and version control

Construction projects go through multiple drawing revisions. Use watermark to stamp the revision letter and date on every page ("REV A - 2026-07-25"). This makes it immediately clear which version is current and which is superseded.

Health and safety plans

Construction phase health and safety plans, site induction documents and emergency procedures are legally required for larger projects. Save as PDF, merge into a project safety file and protect against unauthorised changes.
