How to edit text in a PDF: free options compared

Editing a PDF seems straightforward, but PDF is fundamentally a "print format" — not designed for editing. Still, there are good free options depending on what you want to change.
Why is a PDF hard to edit?
PDF stands for Portable Document Format. It is designed to look the same on every screen and every printer. Text, images and formatting are "baked in" to a fixed layout. That makes precise text editing technically complex: the software needs to know exactly where each character is and what font is used.
Option 1: LibreOffice (free, full-featured)
LibreOffice Draw can open PDF files and actually edit the text. Open the PDF via File → Open, click a text block and change it. Save as PDF. Downside: complex layouts with multiple columns or embedded fonts sometimes shift.

Option 2: Microsoft Word (if you have Word)
In Word 2013 and later you can open a PDF directly: File → Open → select the PDF. Word automatically converts it to an editable document. Like LibreOffice, the layout may shift in complex PDFs.
Option 3: Extract text and retype

When do you need Adobe Acrobat Pro?
For professional text editing in a PDF while preserving exact formatting, fonts and positioning, Adobe Acrobat Pro (paid) is the most reliable option. Free alternatives work well for simple changes but fall short with complex layouts.
