Convert PDF to Word: what are your options?

Want to edit a PDF in Microsoft Word? You can — but conversion quality depends on the type of PDF. Here are the best free methods.
Method 1: Word opens PDFs directly
Newer versions of Microsoft Word (2013 and later) can open PDFs directly and convert them to an editable Word document. Go to File → Open → choose your PDF. Word warns that formatting may differ — click OK. This works best for text PDFs; scans look odd.
Method 2: Google Drive
Upload your PDF to Google Drive, right-click and choose "Open with Google Docs". Google converts the PDF to an editable document. Then export it as .docx via File → Download → Microsoft Word. Free and works in the browser.

Method 3: extract text with PDFrust
If you only need the text (without the formatting), use the PDF-to-text tool. The text can then be pasted into Word and formatted as needed. This is the most reliable method when layout is less important.
Why is PDF-to-Word never perfect?
PDF stores content as positions on a page (x, y coordinates) — not as flowing text with paragraphs and columns like Word does. Conversion is always an interpretation. Complex layouts with multiple columns, tables or images are never reproduced perfectly in Word.
