How to unlock a password-protected PDF

A PDF with an opening password or editing restriction can be frustrating — especially when you want to edit or print your own document. With PDFrust's unlock tool you remove the protection from a PDF you are authorised to edit.
Two types of PDF protection
A PDF can be protected in two ways. An opening password (user password) requires a password when opening. An editing password (owner password) allows opening without a password but blocks editing, copying, or printing. The unlock tool focuses on removing restrictions from documents you legitimately own.
When is unlocking allowed?
You may remove protection from documents you own or are a legitimate user of. For example: your own scanned documents you accidentally protected, PDFs of your own invoices or internal documents. Never use the unlock tool for documents you don't have permission to edit.

How does the unlock tool work?
Open the unlock tool on PDFrust. Upload the protected PDF. If the file has an editing password (but you can open it), PDFrust removes the restrictions directly. If it has an opening password, enter the password — PDFrust then removes the protection from the downloaded file.
Alternative: re-save the PDF
Want to save a PDF without protection but have no password? Open the file in your PDF viewer and choose "Print → Save as PDF". This saves a new PDF without password protection (only works if printing is allowed).
