Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a user password and an owner password?

A user password (also 'open password') is required to open the PDF at all. An owner password (also 'permissions password') places restrictions such as no printing or copying, but the PDF opens without a password. This tool removes owner restrictions. A PDF with a user password cannot be unlocked without that password.

Which restrictions are removed?

The tool removes all owner restrictions: no-print, no-copy, no-edit and no-annotations. After unlocking you can use the PDF fully as a regular unprotected PDF.

How do I know which type of protection my PDF has?

Use the 'View PDF information' tool. It shows the encryption status and which restrictions are active. If the PDF asks for a password when opening, a user password is present.

Are there legal concerns?

You may remove protection from PDFs you own or have permission for. Do not use the tool to remove protection from someone else's documents without permission.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your own browser. Your file never leaves your device and is not stored anywhere.

Is it free?

Yes, completely free, without watermark or account. The site is paid for by ads.

Why in the browser?

PDFrust runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly and modern JavaScript libraries such as pdf-lib and PDF.js. Your file is never sent to a server — all processing happens locally on your device. This means your documents remain private by design, regardless of what they contain. There is no account required, no file size limit, and nothing is stored after you close the tab.
