Forgot PDF password: how to open a protected PDF

You have a password-protected PDF and cannot remember the password. There are two situations: you have forgotten the owner password (edit protection) or the open password. PDFrust can help with the first.

Two types of protection

A PDF can have two types of passwords. The user password locks opening the file — without it the content is unreadable. The owner password only forbids editing, copying, or printing, but the PDF can still be viewed.

Remove edit protection

Forgot the open password

If you need a password just to open the PDF, there is no simple solution. PDF encryption (AES-128 or AES-256) cannot be bypassed without the password. Check whether you stored it somewhere (password manager, email from the sender).

Prevention is better

Protect your own PDFs via PDFrust and store the password directly in your password manager. That way you never lose access to your own files.
