Repair a damaged or corrupted PDF

How does a PDF get damaged?
A PDF can be damaged by an interrupted download, a faulty USB drive, an application crashing during save, or an error during email transmission. Older PDF versions or non-standard creation tools can also produce files that not all viewers support.
What does the repair tool do?
The tool loads the PDF file and tries to re-parse it via the PDF.js engine. Pages that can be read are copied to a new, clean PDF file. Completely unreadable pages are skipped.

What can the tool not fix?
If the file data itself is corrupt — for example after a hard drive failure where bytes were lost — the tool cannot reconstruct the missing data. The tool fixes structural errors in the PDF format, not lost data.
Alternatives if the repair tool does not work?
Try opening the file in a different viewer (Adobe Reader, Foxit, Preview on Mac). Does the sender have a backup? Sometimes re-downloading or having the file re-sent helps. For valuable documents, professional data recovery services are an option.
