Optimize PDF for e-reader and Kindle

Reading PDFs on an e-reader or Kindle is often frustrating due to tiny text and wrong margins. With a few simple adjustments you can make any PDF e-reader-friendly.

Why PDFs read poorly on e-readers

E-readers like Kindle, Kobo and PocketBook have smaller screens (6–7 inches) than an A4 page. A standard PDF is scaled down for display, making text unreadably small. Unlike EPUB format, PDF does not automatically adapt to screen size — the layout is fixed.

Trim margins for more reading space

Most PDF documents have large margins (2–3 cm on each side). On an e-reader this wastes precious screen space. Use the Trim Margins tool on PDFrust to automatically crop the whitespace around the text. The content then fits better on a smaller screen.

Resize to e-reader dimensions

After trimming margins you can reformat the document to a smaller page size that matches the e-reader screen. Use the Resize tool to adjust the page size. A size of 90 × 120 mm (slightly smaller than A6) works well for most 6-inch Kindles.

Reduce file size

E-readers have limited storage and slow processors. A large PDF (over 50 MB) loads slowly and takes up storage. Use the Compress tool to reduce file size. Also remove embedded fonts not needed for an e-reader (via the Metadata tool).

Tips for scientific articles on e-reader

Scientific articles in two-column layout are hard to read on an e-reader. There is no automatic solution that correctly converts two-column layout. The best approach: use the Split tool to split each page into two halves, or read the article via a PDF reader app on a tablet in landscape mode.
