How to adjust or add margins to a PDF

Margins that are too narrow make a document feel crowded; margins that are too wide waste space. With PDFrust's margins tool you adjust the margins of a PDF without distorting the content.

Why adjust margins?

Printer safety margins: many printers cannot print to the edge and need a minimum margin of 5–10 mm. If your PDF goes to the edge you lose content when printing. The margins tool adds extra white space. Conversely: a PDF with huge margins sometimes needs to be trimmed to reduce the net page size.

Margins vs. trimMargins

The margins tool adds white space around the page. The trimMargins tool removes existing empty borders (e.g. a scanned A4 with a wide white border all around). Use margins to add space, trimMargins to remove space.

Step by step

Open the margins tool on PDFrust. Upload your PDF. Enter the desired margins (in mm) for top, right, bottom, and left — or use the symmetric setting for equal margins all around. Download the updated PDF.

Binding margin for print

For professional printing a binding margin (extra space on the inside of the page) is needed so text doesn't disappear into the spine of a bound document. Add that margin via the margins tool before sending it to the printer.
