Split PDF by chapter or section

When splitting by chapter is useful

Situations where you want to split a PDF by section: sending an annual report where each department only needs their chapter, a legal code or handbook where judges or lawyers search per article, a course book where students need to upload per lesson, or archiving long documents where each chapter must be its own file.

Split by page ranges

Use the Split tool on PDFrust to split a PDF by page ranges. Choose "Custom page range" and specify the start and end page number per section. Example: chapter 1 = p. 1–14, chapter 2 = p. 15–28, etc. Download each part as a separate file.

Finding page numbers

For a long document without clear page numbers in the PDF: open the document in a PDF viewer (Adobe Reader, browser) and find the table of contents. If there are bookmarks, they indicate the page numbers of each chapter. Without a table of contents: scroll through manually and note the starting page of each chapter.

The Split to ZIP tool on PDFrust splits a PDF into all individual pages and packs them in a ZIP file. This is useful if you need each chapter as individual pages. You can then manually combine the desired pages with the Merge tool. Ideal for large restructuring projects.

Naming the split files

Give each split file a clear name that describes the content: "ReportXYZ_Chapter1_Introduction.pdf", "ReportXYZ_Chapter2_Methods.pdf", etc. This makes archiving and retrieval easier than generic numbers.
