Recover content from a corrupt or broken PDF

1 min read·25 July 2026

A PDF that won't open, shows a blank document, or throws an error may be corrupted. PDFrust's repair tool attempts to reconstruct the PDF structure and extract accessible content.

What causes PDF corruption?

Incomplete download (connection interrupted while saving). Damaged storage media (faulty USB, SD card, or hard drive). Software crash during saving. File accidentally overwritten or corrupted by malware.

Try recovery with PDFrust

Upload the damaged file to the repair tool. It analyses the PDF structure, rebuilds missing cross-reference tables, and reconstructs page information. Not all damaged PDFs are fully recoverable — the outcome depends on the nature and extent of the damage.

What can be recovered?

Missing or damaged cross-reference table (most common). Missing PDF end-of-file marker (%%EOF). Damaged stream objects (partially). Not recoverable: physically damaged bits, heavily encrypted files without password, severely corrupted data streams.

Prevention beats recovery

Always back up critical PDFs. Store important files in cloud storage (OneDrive, Google Drive) for automatic version history. Download files completely before opening — don't open from a temporary download location.
