How to repair a corrupted or damaged PDF
1 min read·25 July 2026
Does your PDF no longer open, or do you get error messages? With PDFrust's repair tool you can fix corrupted PDF files without installing any software.
Why does a PDF get corrupted?
PDF files can become corrupted due to an interrupted download, a failed email transfer, storage media problems, or software that saved the file incompletely. Sometimes only the EOF marker is missing or the cross-reference tables are broken.
What does the repair tool do?
The PDFrust repair tool reads the damaged file, restores the internal structure, and writes a new, valid PDF file. Page content, text, and images are preserved as much as possible.

Step by step
Go to the repair tool on PDFrust. Drag the damaged file into the upload area. Click "Repair". Download the restored file. Check whether it now opens correctly in your PDF viewer.
If repair does not work
Some files are too heavily damaged to restore completely. Check if you have an earlier version of the file (Recycle Bin, cloud backup, or email attachment). For additional recovery steps you can also use the info tool to see how far the file can be read.
