How to automatically remove blank pages from a PDF

1 min read·24 July 2026

Scanners sometimes insert blank pages when double-side scanning a document with an odd number of pages. The blank page remover on PDFrust detects and removes them automatically.

Why are there blank pages in my scan?

With double-sided scanning (duplex) an ADF scanner always scans both sides of a sheet. If the last page has only one printed side, the scanner adds a blank back page to the PDF. With multiple documents scanned in sequence, separator pages also appear between them.

How does the tool detect blank pages?

The tool renders each page as an image and analyses the pixel colours. Pages where more than 99.5% of pixels are white (or near-white) are considered blank. This also works for pages with a light-grey scanner background.

Can the tool detect near-blank pages?

Pages with only a perforation strip, a small stamp or a watermark line are sometimes counted as content pages because the pixel analysis sees something darker. You can set the threshold: choose a higher value to also consider those pages blank.

What if the tool incorrectly marks a page as blank?

After analysis you see an overview of which pages will be removed. You can restore pages that were wrongly classified before downloading. This way you keep full control over the final result.
