How to merge PDFs on Mac: Preview, Finder, and online

Mac has built-in options to merge PDFs via Preview, but the simplest and most complete method is PDFrust — which works in Safari or Chrome without installing anything.

Method 1: PDFrust in Safari or Chrome

Open Safari or Chrome on your Mac. Go to pdfrust.com and open the merge tool. Drag your PDF files onto the upload zone. Set the order and click "Merge". Download the combined PDF. No installation, no account, works on macOS Sonoma and earlier.

Method 2: Preview on Mac

Open the first PDF in Preview (double-click or open via right-click). Click View → Thumbnails to show the sidebar. Drag the second PDF from Finder into the sidebar at the desired position. Choose File → Export as PDF. Downside: only individual PDFs, not multiple files at once.

Method 3: Automator (advanced)

macOS has a built-in workflow tool called Automator. You can create a workflow that merges multiple PDFs. This requires technical knowledge and is less simple than PDFrust.

Tip: Quick Action in Finder

You can add PDFrust to your home screen as a Quick Action via Safari — share icon → "Add to Home Screen". Then the tool is quickly accessible when you want to merge PDFs from Finder.
