PDF printing problems: causes and solutions

Your PDF won't print, prints blank, or shows only partial content? Known problems have known solutions. A practical guide to printing problems with PDF files.
Problem 1: Blank pages when printing
Cause: the PDF has content as transparent layers or in a colour space your printer doesn't understand. Fix: use the flatten tool to merge all layers, or use the grayscale tool to convert to black and white. Also try printing via a different PDF viewer (Chrome, Firefox).
Problem 2: Printout is blurry or low quality
Cause: the PDF was made for screen use (72–96 DPI) rather than print (300 DPI). Fix: request a higher-resolution version from the sender. If you have the source, re-export with higher DPI.

Problem 3: Printer shows an error
PostScript error or "Cannot process file": the PDF contains advanced features your printer doesn't support. Try: flatten the PDF, reduce the PDF version (use another tool to convert to PDF 1.4), or print via Adobe Reader instead of the browser.
Problem 4: PDF is protected from printing
Some PDFs have print protection. You can view but not print them. The unlock tool can remove print-only protection in certain cases (only if you have the rights to print, e.g. as the owner).
Problem 5: Page gets cut off
Cause: the PDF is larger than the paper size (e.g. A3 PDF on A4 printer). Set the scale option in your print dialogue to "Fit to page". Or use the resize tool in PDFrust to scale the document to A4.
