Reduce PDF file size

1 min read·23 July 2026

A PDF too large to email or upload? By reducing the file size you can still send it. PDFrust compresses your PDF for free in your browser, without uploading your file.

Why is a PDF sometimes so large?

Large PDFs often contain high-resolution images, embedded fonts or uncompressed data. A PDF that comes directly from a scanner is typically larger than one created from a word processor.

How does the compression work?

PDFrust re-renders each page as an image at a lower resolution and compresses it with JPEG. This strongly reduces file size. Text and images are still readable but become slightly less sharp when zooming in.

How much can I reduce the size?

The saving depends on the original. For a scan or photo document you can easily save 50–80%. For a text document with few images the gain is smaller because there is already little to compress.

Are there limitations?

Compression works best for documents with many images. Documents with vector graphics or complex layouts may look slightly different after compression. Always keep a copy of the original.
