2 min read·25 July 2026

Received a rental contract as a PDF? This guide explains how to fill it in, sign it and send it back professionally — no printer, no scanner required.

Fill in the PDF rental contract

Many rental contracts are fillable PDFs with form fields. Open the file in Adobe Reader (free) or via PDFrust Form Fill. Fill in name, address, rent amount and start date. Not all fields work in browsers — use Adobe Reader for more reliable results.

Sign digitally without a printer

You do not need to print to sign a rental contract. Use PDFrust Sign to add a digital signature. You can sign by: • Drawing with mouse or finger (on touchscreen) • Uploading as an image (photo of a handwritten signature) • Typing in a handwriting style Add date and initials if requested.

Is a digital signature legally valid?

In most countries, a digital signature is legally valid for rental contracts. A simple electronic signature (SES) is sufficient for standard rental agreements. Note: some landlords require a wet signature — check this in advance.

Flatten and send PDF

After signing: flatten the PDF via PDFrust Flatten. This makes the signature permanent and prevents others from modifying the PDF. Send by email with a CC to yourself as proof. Keep a copy in your archive.

Attachments with the rental contract

Landlords often request copies of your ID and pay slips as attachments. Combine your signed rental contract PDF and all attachments into one file using PDFrust Merge. Redact your national ID number (add a black box via PDFrust Redact) if you prefer not to share it.
