How to copy text from a PDF for free

Extracting text from a PDF can be done in multiple ways: directly selecting if the PDF has a text layer, or via text extraction if it is a scan. PDFrust helps in both cases — directly in your browser, without software.

Select and copy directly

If the PDF has a text layer (not a scan), you can select text in any PDF viewer with the mouse cursor and copy it with Ctrl+C (or Cmd+C on Mac). Then paste it into Word, Notepad, or an email.

PDF is a scan: what now?

Scanned PDFs contain no text layer, only an image. In that case, normal copying does not work. You need OCR (optical character recognition) to make the text readable. Tesseract-based OCR is available in PDFrust.

Copy protection blocking you?

Some PDFs are protected and forbid copying. If the PDF has no print protection, you can free it using the unlock tool in PDFrust and then copy the text.
