Can't copy text from a PDF: causes and fixes
2 min read·24 July 2026
You select text in a PDF but pasting gives garbled characters, empty text or nothing at all. This is a very common problem with straightforward causes — and most cases are fixable.
Cause 1: the PDF is a scan
The most common reason is that the PDF has no real text layer. A scanned document is an image of text — the computer sees letters as pixels, not characters. Copying does not work. The fix: use the OCR tool to recognise the text and download it as a text file.
Cause 2: the PDF is protected
PDFs can be protected so that copying text is forbidden. The document owner set that restriction. In the PDF properties (in Adobe Reader: File → Properties → Security) you can see which actions are allowed. Use PDFrust's Unlock tool to remove owner protection and re-enable copying.

Cause 3: broken character encodings
Some PDFs have damaged font embedding or non-standard character encodings. You can select the text but pasting gives symbols or empty space. In that case PDFrust's PDF-to-text tool helps: it extracts the raw text layer and gives you a usable .txt file.
Cause 4: text embedded as an image
Even non-scanned PDFs can contain images of text. This sometimes happens when exporting from design software or with specific fonts. The only fix is OCR. Use the OCR tool and choose the document language for the best recognition.
