PDF too large for attachment: solutions and limits
1 min read·25 July 2026
Most email providers have an attachment limit of 10–25 MB. Is your PDF too large? PDFrust shrinks the file so it fits.
What are the attachment limits per provider?
Gmail: max 25 MB per email. Outlook/Hotmail: max 20 MB. Yahoo Mail: max 25 MB. Business Microsoft 365: default max 20 MB (admins can change this). Sending a PDF above this limit? You'll get an error message.
Compress PDF in PDFrust
Open the Compress tool on PDFrust. Upload your PDF. Choose the compression level. Download the compressed version. A 30 MB PDF with images typically becomes 7–12 MB — well under Gmail's limit.

Alternatives for very large files
Is your PDF still too large after compression (e.g. 50+ MB)? Consider: splitting the PDF into several smaller files (split tool), uploading the file to Google Drive or OneDrive and sending a link, or using WeTransfer for files up to 2 GB.
Compress images separately
Does your PDF contain many photos? Use the image compress tool to specifically shrink the photos. This often gives the biggest file reduction.
