Cannot select or copy text from PDF — why and how to fix it
2 min read·25 July 2026
You want to copy text from a PDF but nothing gets selected. This is a very common problem with two completely different causes: security protection or a scanned PDF. This guide covers the diagnosis and solution.
Cause 1: the PDF is scanned (no text layer)
A scanned PDF consists of images of the text — no actual text is stored in the file. You cannot select anything because technically there is no text. Solution: use PDFrust OCR (text recognition) to make the PDF searchable. After OCR you can select and copy text.
Cause 2: copy protection is enabled
The creator of the PDF has set copy protection. In Adobe Reader you can see this via "Properties" → "Security" — if "Copying of Content" shows "Not Allowed", the PDF is protected. Use PDFrust Unlock to remove the protection — this works when no owner password is set.

Cause 3: font embedded as image
Some PDF generators (including PowerPoint under certain settings) render text as image pixels rather than actual text characters. It looks like text but technically is not. OCR is also the solution here — but quality depends on resolution.
Using PDFrust OCR
Open PDFrust → choose OCR (Recognise Text). Upload your PDF. Select the language (Dutch/English/German etc.) for better recognition. Click Process. Download the new PDF — all text is now searchable and selectable.
Export text from PDF to TXT
After OCR you can also export all text via PDFrust Extract Text. You get a plain TXT file with all recognised text — ideal for editing in Word, Google Docs or further processing.
