PDF in politics and campaigns: party manifesto, leaflets and candidate lists

2 min read·25 July 2026

Political parties and local candidate lists produce large quantities of campaign materials. PDF is the most common format for party programmes, leaflets and membership forms. Learn how to create, distribute and archive campaign PDFs professionally.

Party programme as searchable PDF

A party programme as PDF must be searchable — journalists and voters search for specific policy topics. Make sure the PDF contains not just a scan but also text. Use OCR if the document is scanned. Add bookmarks per chapter (healthcare/education/economy) for quick navigation.

Compressing election leaflets for digital distribution

An election leaflet with photos and colour images quickly becomes large. Compress the PDF for digital distribution without making the visual quality loss noticeable. Aim for a maximum of 3 MB for social media and email, maximum 10 MB for the party website.

Candidate list as overview PDF

A candidate list as PDF contains names, photos, background and possibly programme priorities per candidate. Add page numbers and a table of contents so voters can quickly find specific candidates. Publish the PDF on the party website with the candidate names in the metadata for better findability.

Membership recruitment forms

Recruiting new members via a fillable PDF form lowers the barrier. Create a form with fields for name, address, email and donation amount. Digitally completed forms can be sent back directly via email or online form services.

Archiving election results

Election result reports are published as official documents. Keep the official PDFs from the electoral authority combined with your own results analysis in an archive PDF. Add metadata: election year, constituency, party abbreviation for easy retrieval.

Communication after the election

After the election you communicate with members and voters via updates, coalition agreements and reports. Always add a stamp to official documents: FINAL / DRAFT / CONFIDENTIAL. Never send sensitive negotiation documents as an unprotected PDF.
