Combine PDFs on Mac: Preview vs PDFrust

1 min read·25 July 2026

On a Mac you can merge PDFs with the built-in Preview app — but there are limitations. PDFrust offers more control and works on any Mac without installation.

Method 1: Preview (free, built-in)

Open the first PDF in Preview. Go to View → Thumbnails. Drag the second PDF into the sidebar at the desired position. Save as a new file via File → Export as PDF. Works fine for simple merging, but offers no reordering or selection of individual pages.

Method 2: PDFrust (more control)

Upload multiple PDF files, reorder them via drag-and-drop, remove unwanted pages, and download the combined file. All in the browser — no installation, no account. Works on any Mac, including older macOS versions.

Set file order

Make sure you drag files in the correct order — the first file in the list becomes the first page of the result. PDFrust shows you a preview of the order before merging.

Merging large files

Combining multiple large PDFs results in a large file. Use the compress tool after merging to reduce file size before sending by email.

Mac alternatives

Adobe Acrobat (paid), PDF Expert (paid), Automator (free but complex). PDFrust is the only free option without installation that offers full page control.
