Flattening a PDF means that interactive form fields, signatures, and annotations are merged into the page content. The result is a plain, non-editable PDF. Useful for archiving and sharing.

What does flatten do?

An interactive PDF form has fillable fields you can edit. After flattening, those fields are gone as editable elements — the entered text is now part of the page itself. The fields can no longer be changed.

When do you use flatten?

After filling in a form: flatten it before sending so the recipient cannot change the filled values. When archiving completed documents: the data is permanently captured. After placing a signature: flattening makes the signature an inseparable part of the page.

How to flatten with PDFrust?
