How to fill in a PDF on Mac for free

Filling in a PDF form on a Mac can be done via Preview (built-in) or via PDFrust in Safari. Both are free and require no extra software. Here is how it works.

Interactive PDFs in Preview

Open the PDF in Preview. If the PDF has interactive form fields you can click directly on them and type. Preview recognises most standard PDF fields automatically. After filling in: save with Cmd+S.

Non-interactive PDFs

Does the PDF have no fill-in fields (flat PDF)? Then in Preview you can add text via Tools > Annotate > Text. Drag the text box to the right place and type the information.

PDFrust in Safari on Mac

Open pdfrust.com in Safari. Use the text overlay tool to place text anywhere in the PDF. Ideal for forms without interactive fields. After filling in, download the PDF with the entered data.

Add signature on Mac

In Preview: Tools > Annotate > Signature. Draw on the trackpad or use the camera. The signature is saved and you can use it with any PDF afterwards. In PDFrust: use the signature tool.
