Add page numbers to PDF with custom styles and positions

Adding page numbers to a PDF is essential for long documents. Discover how to add page numbers at any position and in any style.
Why page numbers matter
Page numbers are essential for reports, theses, manuals and any other long document. They make it easy to refer to a specific page in conversations or meetings. A numbered document also looks more professional than an unnumbered one.
Add page numbers with PDFrust
Use the Page Numbers tool on PDFrust. Upload your PDF and choose: position (bottom left, bottom center, bottom right, top left, top center, top right), font and font size, the start page (first page to be numbered), the starting page number (e.g. start at 1, 5 or any other number), and a prefix or suffix (e.g. "Page 1 of 10" or "- 1 -").

Skip pages in numbering
Title pages, tables of contents and appendices are often excluded from numbering. Set the start page to the first content page. If you want to skip the first 3 pages, set the start page to 4 and the starting number to 1. This way page 4 of the document gets number "1".
Styles: Arabic, Roman and letters
PDFrust supports Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3), uppercase letters (A, B, C) and lowercase letters (a, b, c). Some documents use Roman numerals (i, ii, iii) for front matter. This is a common academic convention that lets the main content numbering start at "1".
After numbering: review and adjust
Review the result after adding numbers. Check that numbers do not overlap other content (use page margins as a guide). Use the Header Footer tool for more control over text in the top or bottom margin — including dynamic fields such as page number, total page count or document name.
