How to convert PDF to Excel: best methods

Converting a PDF with table data to Excel is not straightforward — PDFs do not store table structure. But there are good methods to extract the data. We explain them, from free browser options to reliable desktop software.
Why is PDF to Excel difficult?
PDF is a presentation format: it stores how text and numbers look, not what they mean. There is no concept of "row" or "column". Software must analyse the layout and guess which numbers belong together — this works well for simple tables but less so for complex layouts.
Method 1: copy-paste from browser
Open the PDF in your browser, select the table, copy the text (Ctrl+C), and paste into Excel. Excel sometimes recognises tabs as column separators. For simple tables this works surprisingly well. Want the text separately first? Use the "PDF to text" tool on PDFrust.

Method 2: Adobe Acrobat or online converters
Adobe Acrobat has a built-in "Export to Excel" feature with good table recognition. Online converters like Smallpdf or ILovePDF offer this too — but they upload your file to their servers. Only use these for non-confidential documents.
Method 3: manual text extraction
Use the "PDF to text" tool on PDFrust to extract raw text. Paste it into a text editor, manually structure the rows, and import into Excel via "Data → From Text/CSV". More work, but completely private and free for any type of PDF.
