Flip PDF colours: white on black, negative image

1 min read·25 July 2026

Invert a white-background PDF to black with white text — or flip all colours in a colour document to create a negative. PDFrust's invert tool applies colour inversion to any PDF in one click.

When to invert colours

Dark mode for heavy-reading documents — white text on black is easier on the eyes in low light. Negative effect for artistic applications or design. Invert images for use as masks or overlays. Presentations where the inverted look fits the aesthetic.

How to use the invert tool

Upload your PDF to the invert tool. It inverts all colours in the document: black becomes white, white becomes black, red becomes cyan, blue becomes yellow, and so on. Both text and images are inverted.

Invert images only

Want to invert only images while keeping text black on white? This is more advanced. Export the page as an image (pdf2jpg), invert the image separately, then add it back as a background. Precise text-layer control requires a vector editing tool.

Combine with grayscale

Combine the grayscale tool (convert to grey) with the invert tool for a classic black-on-white negative. Grey values are also inverted: light grey becomes dark grey and vice versa.
