How to invert PDF colors for a negative effect

Inverting colors in a PDF produces a negative effect: black becomes white, white becomes black, and all colors are mirrored on the color spectrum. Useful for dark mode presentations, artistic purposes, or reducing ink usage.

When do you want to invert colors?

Invert is useful if you want to print a PDF on dark paper, create a dark mode presentation, or make a negative of a scanned document. Some users also temporarily invert to read more easily (light sensitivity to white screens).

Difference from greyscale

Greyscale (black and white) turns all colours into shades of grey. Invert reverses all colours: a colour image stays coloured but in complementary colours. Combine them for a negative-greyscale effect.

Ink saving

Inverting a document with a predominantly white background gives a dark background. Printing this on a printer that uses more ink for dark areas does not automatically save ink. But on e-ink devices or OLED screens, a dark background uses less energy.
