How to edit a PDF without Adobe Acrobat: free alternatives

1 min read·25 July 2026

Adobe Acrobat Pro costs €15–25 per month. But for most PDF tasks — merging, splitting, compressing, signing, filling in — you do not need Acrobat. PDFrust does it for free, directly in your browser.

What can you do with Acrobat that you can also do on PDFrust?

Merge, split, compress, delete and rotate pages, fill in forms, add text stamps, add watermarks, sign, run OCR (scanned to searchable), add page numbers, and more. All tools are available for free on PDFrust.

What can you not do (that Acrobat Pro can)?

Convert PDF to Word or Excel (requires cloud AI), live-edit text in a PDF (editing existing content), create advanced PDF forms with JavaScript, add digital certificates (eIDAS-qualified). For most users these are edge cases.

Besides PDFrust (browser-based), LibreOffice Draw (edit PDF as a drawing) and Okular (Linux, PDF annotations) are also free options. But browser tools have advantages: no installation, always up to date, and work on any device.

When is Acrobat worth it?

If you have advanced PDF workflows daily, create PDF forms with complex fields and JavaScript, or process PDF/X files for professional printers. For one-off tasks or small businesses, PDFrust is a fully capable free alternative.
