PDF word count and page statistics overview

1 min read·25 July 2026

How many words are in your PDF? How many pages, characters and images? PDFrust's word count tool gives you a complete statistics overview for any PDF file.

What is word count used for?

Word counting is useful for: checking thesis or report requirements (e.g. minimum 5,000 words), estimating translation costs (translators charge per word), calculating reading time, or verifying delivery specs for text-based services.

How PDFrust counts

The word count tool parses the PDF's text layer and counts all words. This only works for PDFs with real text content (not scanned). Scanned PDFs: use OCR first, then word count on the converted file.

Statistics you receive

PDFrust shows: word count, character count (with and without spaces), page count, average words per page. This is the basic information translators, editors and students need.

Comparing with Word

Microsoft Word counts words differently from PDFrust — Word counts captions, footnotes and headers depending on settings. PDF word counting is based on all visible text in the file.

Compare multiple files

If you want to compare multiple documents by word count, run them through the tool one by one. There's no batch word count function.
