What does GDPR require when sharing documents?
GDPR requires that you do not share personal data of third parties without a legal basis. When publishing minutes, research reports, or court decisions, names and identification data are typically removed or replaced with 'the data subject' or 'X'. This is called pseudonymisation or anonymisation.
Difference between anonymisation and pseudonymisation
Anonymisation permanently removes all links to a person — there is no going back. Pseudonymisation replaces data with a code (e.g. 'Patient A') but keeps the link elsewhere. For publicly shared documents anonymisation is the goal; for internal GDPR-compliant storage pseudonymisation suffices.
