A self-made photobook as PDF gives you complete control over layout, sequence and text. You can have it printed at any print shop, share it digitally or keep it as a keepsake book. Learn how to create a professional-looking PDF photo album.

Software for creating photo books

Popular options for laying out a photobook PDF: Canva (free, web-based, export as PDF), Adobe InDesign (professional, subscription), Affinity Publisher (affordable InDesign alternative), Microsoft Publisher (Windows, simple). The exported PDF serves as the basis for further editing in PDFrust.

Photo resolution for print

For printed photo books: minimum 300 DPI at the final format. A photo of 2000 x 3000 pixels printed on A4 (21 x 29.7 cm) = approximately 240 DPI — just below print resolution. Use photos of 3500+ pixels wide for full-page photos on A4. Check by zooming in the PDF — if the photo becomes blurry at 100% in Adobe Reader, the resolution is too low for print.

Sequence and narrative

A good photo book has a storyline: chronological, by location or by theme. Start with a strong opening photo or double-page spread. End with an emotional highlight or overarching closing photo. Alternating rhythm (small detail photos next to panoramas) holds attention.

Text captions and title page

Add captions to special photos — date, location, name, anecdote. Use a more readable typeface than decorative scripts for caption text (minimum 9pt, prefer 11pt). The title page can be simple: name of the album, year, and a strong photo as background.

Compressing PDF for sharing

High-quality photobook PDFs quickly reach 500+ MB. Never send without compression. Use PDFrust to compress the photos — choose a high quality setting (80–90%) so print results are still acceptable. For digital sharing: lower quality (60%) is sufficient for screen display.

Printing at a local or online print shop

You can have your PDF photobook printed at any print service. Always ask for the specifications: format, bleed, colour profile (CMYK or sRGB). Most online photo services accept PDF with sRGB colour profile and 3 mm bleed.
