Google Docs to PDF: save, adjust and preserve formatting

1 min read·25 July 2026

Google Docs, Sheets and Slides offer direct PDF export. But sometimes the formatting is wrong, margins are off, or you want to edit the PDF further. This is the complete guide.

Export Google Docs to PDF

In Google Docs: File → Download → PDF Document (.pdf). Or via File → Print → choose "Save as PDF" as printer. The second method gives more control over page settings.

Formatting problems on export

Common problems: fonts are substituted if not built into the browser, tables shift, images move. Solutions: use only websafe fonts, fix images (not "Inline" but "Fixed on page").

Adjust page margins

Small margins give a full document but can cut off text when printing. In Docs: File → Page Setup. After export you can also use PDFrust's margins tool to add whitespace.

Google Sheets to PDF

Large spreadsheets are sometimes spread across multiple pages. In Sheets: File → Print → set scale so it fits on one page, or define the print range. Export as PDF the same way.

Merge multiple documents

If you want to combine multiple Google documents: export them separately as PDF and then merge via the merge tool in PDFrust. This gives more control over the final layout than Google Docs's combine functions.
